Around 1810, Capt. Blackburn built his dogtrot house from the virgin white oak and poplar trees cut from the land he was awarded for his services during the Revolutionary War. Captain Blackburn died in 1820, was burried on the land, and the house was passed on to his son John Porter Blackburn

Lewis County,Tennessee was chartered in 1843 and dedicated to the memory of Meriwether Lewis. The first County Court met in this house and the initial grand jury convened in the corn crib. Both buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On display within are various items of nineteenth century domestic material culture.
